Hell yeah! My stepdad was a plank owner for the Stennis. I'm told it's in dock these days undergoing maintenance. I got to go on one of the Tiger Cruises. Maybe even this one? Though I forget much of it as I was so young at the time. Fun fact, the ship was moored next to the Enterprise. I got to go onto both of them. :)

Many, many years ago now (1979?), I was onboard a Spruance destroyer, part of a small contingent of USN ships headed to Portand for the Rose Festival (this was obviously years before Portland went insane). I don't remember the name or the class of the Frigate in our group, but they hit a wave that caved in the forward gun mount. The group had to slow down as a result naturally. We were getting bounced around pretty good in the Spruance (DD972, The Oldendorf) but nothing broke that I know of.

The Burkes are built extra wide in the front. It was planned. You lose a little in speed but you gain a lot in stability. The front of the ship is extra buoyant.

My Dad served in the USN for 20 years on Destroyers mostly. His shore service only amounted to two years. First ship was the USS Selfridge, DD357. Also was in Pearl Harbor the day it was attacked.
